HSBC Triathlon – Gravenhurst, ON

HSBC Triathlon – Gravenhurst, ON – July 19, 2009

Tatum had another great time at the HSBC Triathlon again this year in Gravenhurst, ON, as he watched Ruth-Anne swim 750m (some say that distance was LONGER than 750m); ride her bike 20km (well, he was there at the beginning and the end of the ride); and was there to witness her successful finish.  Tatum was so proud of her!  She cut 20 minutes off last year’s Gravenhurst time. Wow, RA!

The larger boat, the Wenonah (right), is one of the boats that the swimmers use to be taken to where they will be dropped off to start their 750m swim.  Ruth-Anne says, “Most people take these boats to go on a Muskoka cruise, but I take this boat to jump out of it!” Tatum thinks that Ruth-Anne has such a funny sense of humour.

Can you imagine?  Tatum’s mom just about missed this photo op of Ruth-Anne exiting the 750m swim!

Bender’s Travels Abroad

Bender’s Travels Abroad

Bender is a teddy bear who enjoy many travels.  His adventures took
him to Missouri, where he saw the caves, the Golden Arch in St. Louis before meeting this really cool decorated car in Branson.  Bender also took part in some entertainment, both on and off stage.

Here is the decorated car that Bender saw:

Now, THAT is some car!

Like most of the teddy bears that travel abroad, Bender just loved to
have his picture taken on signs, in desert, and with
animals*.

Bender is enjoying this photo op with NASCAR.

And…here he is showing off on top of some signs that he found along the way.

Well, the sand dunes might not be a sign, but Bender was trying to play hide and seek.  Bender is such a funny bear!

Bender just loves to "bend an ear" of someone who will listen.

And here are some other friends he met along the way.

This gang of men looked dangerous!

Gawk!  What’s this??! It’s a good thing that Bender is protected by some glass.  It makes him feel much safer. 🙂

Mountain Lions and ground hogs were also featured friends while Bender toured the countryside.Arizona-Sonor-aDesert-museum-mountainlion.pngArizona-Sonora-deser-tmuseum-prairiedogs.png

Book Review: Starting With Comprehension

Starting With Comprehension

starting-with-comprehension.jpgLooking for a great resource to nurture and strengthen comprehension skills in kindergarten?  This was a question that I asked a kindergarten specialist and, without hesitation, this was the book recommended as THE best place to start.

Click on the Read More link below for more information about this excellent resource!

The author’s premise is that it is "never too early to start comprehension instruction".  And if you believe that "every child can learn" and that "reading begins with meaning making", then you will certainly find this teacher resource one of the best!

Starting with Comprehension is a reading program designed for five- and six-year olds.

Andie’s kindergarten class in Portland, Oregon, is made up of students whose English is their second, if not third language; some students "have little or no alphabet knowledge when they arrive in the fall"; and many come from low-income neighbourhoods.  They enter the school and have to get used to school culture for the first time and many have to interact with classmates whose first language is not English.

Through art, movement, oral language and writing, these young students are able to communicate their understanding of what they read.  And the authors show how to nurture and strengthen comprehension skills "even before decoding begins".

This book is at the top of my favorite educational resources list, when it comes to coaching teachers about comprehension strategies in the kindergarten classroom.

Tim Hortons Grimsby Halton Marathon and 5K Run

Tim Hortons Grimsby Halton Marathon and 5K Run

Tatum was once again wowed by all the people running at the most recent Tim Hortons Grimsby Halton Marathon and 5K Run.  He traveled to Grimsby to watch Ruth-Anne as she ran 5K in the snow.  The weather was mild and one 5K runner had shorts on.

The runner in shorts must have felt a bit cold as he was the first runner in the 5K race to cross the finish line.  You can see him in the video below.  He is the runner to the right of the screen, in shorts. Brrrrrrrrrrr!

Tatum was excited to see Ruth-Anne cross the finish line.  He says that her time was 0:25:56.1. Of course, teddy bears need some things translated.  So, Ruth-Anne told him that she ran the race in 25 minutes, 56.1 seconds.  She was really happy about her race.

Here is the video of her finishing the race.  Tatum was at the finish line throwing out all kinds of cheers!!!

Tatum and the Ice Sculptures

Tatum and the Ice Sculptures

During Tatum’s most recent walk down by Barrie’s Waterfront, he came across some ice sculptures that had dragons, a king’s throne, knights in shining armour and Romeo offering flowers to Juliet.

Tatum could not resist the temptation to have his picture taken with the dragon, a joker, and of course, he just HAD to have a seat on the king’s throne.

Click on the play button to view Tatum’s photo op with the ice sculptures.

Remember to turn up the volume on your computer speakers.
